We don’t know much about this thing, Ikonoskop is only teasing the bare minimum of specs, but while we don’t expect to be able to afford it, the upcoming A-cam3D is certainly an object of lust. The company has cut its teeth on a $10k 1080p RAW camera, the A-cam dII, and now it’s taking that same tech into the realm of 3D. The new 6 pound unit (including battery and memory) will be able record to 25 or 30 fps in individual RAW sequences, has a TBD pricetag, and will be built on order.

JVC’s jumping in on the CES fun today with a whole slew of new camcorders, with the GZ-HM1 HD Everio leading the pack. This 1080p shooter offers up better-than-usual low light performance and camera-shake compensation. There’s a 10.62 megapixel CMOS sensor within, though we imagine the $1,199.95 price tag will stun those who aren’t looking for something fancy when it ships in March. The February-bound GZ-HM550 capture 1080p while offering up a 16x zoom, 32GB of internal flash memory, an SD / SDHC card slot, Bluetooth (for geotagging, naturally) and a $799.95 price tag. In case that guy is still too rich for your blood, JVC’s offering up no fewer than eight other guys that range from $229.95 to $649.95, all of which should be out by next month. Peek those sources below if you’re on the hunt for the nitty-gritty details.

This Canon PowerShot G1, released in 2000 and listed at Best Buy for $800 in 2001, has held up well. Sure, 3.34 megapixels isn’t much, but spec for spec, this codger can almost hang with the kids.

Seriously, you could just post this spec sheet next to a Canon in a retail store now, and most people wouldn’t bat an eye. They sure as hell wouldn’t buy it, but they probably wouldn’t say anything, either: In ten years, what have we gained? More megapixels, higher-quality video, some more ports, better low-light performance, smaller memory cards, better battery life, and a little compactness. Canon’s cheapest P&S, the 10-megapixel Powershot A480, handily outspecs the $800 G1 for just $110 (though it doesn’t have video). Today, if you hand Canon $800, they’ll hand you back a DSLR that shoots HD video:

What’s amazing, though, is that if you did spend $800 on this camera back in 2000, you could still use it today. It’d be beaten to hell, the zoom motor would sound like it had gained sentience and learned to experience real, mammalian pain, and the 16MB CF card would have been replaced with something a little roomier, but damnit, it would work—and your Facebook friends wouldn’t know the difference. You can’t say that about many gadgets from 10 years ago, so here’s to you, Powershot: You were great, or your category moves slow. Whichever makes you feel better.

It’s not impossible to find a camera with integrated WiFi out there, but your choices are unquestionably limited. Thankfully for those in the market for such a device, it seems as if Samsung is gearing up to release quite the formidable opponent. Without so much as an official press release, the CL80 has emerged on the outfit’s website packing a 14 megapixel sensor, optical image stabilization, a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen (capacitive with haptic feedback), a 720p movie mode (H.264), microSD expansion slot (groan…), USB 2.0 connectivity and an above-average 7x optical zoom. The Instant Upload feature enables users to upload their shots to Facebook, Flickr, Photobox or Picasa, and for those who prefer to capture motion clips, it’ll also shoot your videos to YouTube when a hotspot is found. Nary a word has been spoken regarding price or release, but we’re going out on a limb here and surmising that much more information will be revealed at CES.

In something of a design departure, Panasonic has introduced the flat fronted, square-edged 12.1 megapixel FP8 to the Lumix range of beginner-friendly, pocket-sized point-and-shoot compacts. It recalls similarly slender Sony Cyber-shots to an extent, yet even more closely apes older Konica Minolta Dimage X series digital snapshots, not just in looks but also because it features folded optics – here Leica branded – that ensure that at no point does its internally stacked 4.6x optical zoom (a 35mm equivalent 28-128mm) protrude from the body. Is imitation really here a form of flattery, or a merely a following of an already tried and tested route?

Curiously though, there’s no automatic cover protecting the lens of this digital doppelganger when the camera is inactive, the glass of the FP8 permanently exposed. This inevitably means it quickly becomes smeared with fingerprints when taking the camera in and out of pockets, whilst the lens positioning towards the right hand edge of the faceplate means fingertips can initially stray into shot when gripping the camera in both hands. Hand this camera to a friend or passer by to take your photograph and there are bound to be such problems.

Clearly aimed at the fashion conscious ’status seeker’, the Panasonic DMC-FP8 comes in a choice of silver, black or red bodies. We had the almost crimson version in for review and, though it lacks the sense of sophistication of the alternatives, it’s certainly the most eye-catching. As an added attention grabber the unit’s back plate buttons are illuminated in pale blue when in use, and bleep when pressed. Fortunately the sound can be de-activated if you want to avoid drawing attention to yourself when attempting candid shots, and the lit buttons can themselves be snuffed out if you want to look more the consummate photographer and less the gamer.

Minimalist appearance and gimmicky controls aside, the FP8’s key features include its aforementioned 28mm wide-angle lens, HD movies of the 1280×720 pixels variety (with selectable 16:9 image ratio alongside 4:3 or 3:2), 2.7-inch 230k-dot LCD screen for framing in the absence of an optical viewfinder, ISO 80-1600 light sensitivity (extendable to ISO6400 via the fully auto High Sensitivity scene mode), Panasonic’s pioneering intelligent auto (iA) functionality whereby the camera ‘recognises’ the subject before it and automatically adjusts settings, ‘Power’ OIS (optical image stabilization) said to be twice as effective at combating camera shake as Panasonic’s previous implementation of OIS (not that we noticed), plus continuous shooting up to 10 frames per second with the caveat of incremental resolution drops (otherwise it’s 2.3fps).

This functionality is all wrapped up within a solid-feel aluminum body that’s portably lightweight at just 131g without supplied lithium ion rechargeable battery, or the removable SD/SDHC media card required to expand the 40MB internal cache provided.

The Leica X1 is a lovely little camera and, as we’ve seen, it can take some stunning shots. Now it’s been given a full examination in a review big enough to match the thing’s decidedly over-sized asking price of $2,000. Over 28 pages dpreview attempts to verify that this machine has the performance to match that MSRP, and the news is not particularly good. The Leica does well enough, particularly when it comes to delivering high-quality images even at high ISO settings — a major stumbling block for most compacts — but it didn’t deliver performance that significantly trumps the Panasonic GF1, which costs less than half as much and has the added bonus of capturing HD video. Value proposition? Hardly, but a solid performer if your disposable income and aesthetic needs greatly outweigh your common sense.

Incredulously enough, no other major camera maker has come out and mimicked Samsung’s front-facing LCD approach found on the TL225 (or ST550 in some areas), so if you’re in the market, it’s either this one or the lesser-specced TL220 (ST500). If you’re considering picking up the former as a bang-up gift for your special someone, you’d probably do yourself a solid by taking a peek at a few reviews around the web. The long and short of it is this: the camera’s dual LCDs are well implemented, and they actually do come in handy for those looking to handle the “self-portrait” duties in the relationship. Beyond that, however, there wasn’t a lot of praise to go around. For starters, the camera relies only on microSD memory, so those spare SD cards you’ve got laying around are no good here. Then there’s the so-so image quality coupled with the staggeringly weak battery life; Photography Blog was only able to squeeze out around 100 shots while making heavy use of the touchscreen. Everyone seemed to agree that the cam wasn’t for everyone, so be sure and take a look around before committing.

The new model will be the first to leverage Cisco’s networking technology since it bought Pure Digital in a multi-million dollar deal in early 2009.

Details are thin on the ground at the moment, but we’ve been informed by a Cisco spokesperson that the new model will feature “a large screen that slides to reveal the record and menu buttons underneath” allowing users to see what is going on when they are recording video.

The screen itself won’t be touchscreen however, presumably in an attempt to keep costs down.

Owners of the new pocket video camcorder will be able to record video footage and then upload it straight from the camcorder over Wi-Fi networks both private and public, a feature currently being offered in some DSLRs.
