Thought Android was killing it in the US? Try the rest of planet Earth, bud. The latest from our friends at Canalys has Google’s mobile OS on 48 percent of smartphones worldwide, or nearly one out of every two sold. Mountain View’s stratospheric rise came at someone’s expense, and it looks like Nokia’s the loser here folks, which corroborates the data from last week’s IDC report. Espoo’s foibles are troublesome in a market that grew 73 percent year over year, especially when Samsung shipped 421 percent more handsets than it did a year ago. As a result, the Korean company has surpassed Nokia in smartphone marketshare, just like its rival in Cupertino. Despite the rampant growth, the research firm suspects Sammy could have done better, noting that it had failed to capitalize on Nokia’s “weakened state around the world” with its “global scale and channel reach.” We’ll see if Samsung takes Canalys’ constructive criticism to heart in Q3, but while you wait, you can read the full report after the jump.

iPhone apps like Red Laser have made scanning barcodes with your iPhone infinitely easier. As a result, it is now simpler than ever to order stuff like DVDs and CDs online. Having barcodes stored in your iPhone now makes it possible to make shopping lists, look up nutritional information about the food, and doing a little comparison shopping.

With the anticipated advent of the next generation of iPhone, consumers are desperately wondering how their apps will be affected. Which apps will be available for the new iPhone? What improvements will be made with those applications? And – most importantly – how much are these bad boys going to cost?

Red laser 2.2 currently tops out at under two quid to download, making it extremely affordable. All the same, with sites like ShopSavvy and Android offering free applications, consumers are beginning to wonder when and how Apple will respond to all the freebies floating around. When we upgrade to the new generation of iPhones, it would be nice to know that previously purchased applications will be compatible with the new phone. Or alternatively, to be assured that a free option will be available to either replace or convert our old apps.

It may seem like arguing over small change, but consumers have come to expect the most from companies, waiting for the most trendy, cost-effective, and green products to come out. Currency speaks, and applications that do things like scan barcodes are valuable investments that shouldn?t have to be repurchases with each technological advancement.

Wondering what’s in store for Apple’s next-generation iPhone, the 4G? We round up all the latest rumors and speculation on the alleged “iPhone HD.”

Steve Jobs just can’t seem to catch a day of rest. With the allegedly world-changing Apple iPad now less than a week out from launch, Apple astrologers with eyes gazing skyward have allegedly caught focus of Apple’s next world-changing product launch: The iPhone 4G. Though still hazy, details that make a startling amount of sense have started to pile up. Have these Internet street preachers really foretold the fourth coming of the Jesus Phone? 

We’ll likely find out in sixth months. But in the meantime, here’s the word on the street.

All hail the “iPhone HD”

Engadget apparently has it on good authority that the device we have so longed referred to as the “iPhone 4G” will actually be the “iPhone HD.” As far as naming conventions go, this would actually make a lot of sense and eliminate confusion.

Why? Although “iPhone 4G” would suggest that it’s the fourth generation of the phone, some could also take it to mean it supports 4G wireless Internet, which may or may not be the case. Apple used “iPhone 3G” for its second-generation product, so clearly the convention has more to do with Internet access than generations.

Even if it does support 4G, dropping the sequential numbers in and starting fresh with “iPhone HD” could also help Apple shake the perception that each new iPhone is merely a refresh of the last. And if rumors hold true, it will be far from that.

Speedy A4 processor

The Wall Street Journal hinted at the new iPhone’s “faster processor” in the article that got the ball rolling, but Daring Fireballs’ John Gruber later dropped more details in his own snide commentary. According to Gruber, the chip powering the iPhone HD will share its bloodline with the A4 system-on-a-chip that powers the iPad.

Considering Apple developed this chip itself (basing it heavily on ARM’s Cortex A9 design), we wouldn’t be surprised to see the fruits of its labor appear in more than one mobile device. The 1GHz processor and onboard graphics should offer a considerable boost in horsepower from the 600MHz Cortex A8 processor currently driving the iPhone 3G S.

960 x 640 Display

Handsets like the Motorola Droid and HTC HD2 have dwarfed the iPhone’s 320-by-480-pixel screen for months now, so Apple will clearly need to take a step forward with the next iteration. John Gruber claims it will take one big step on each axis, essentially quadrupling the number of pixels to 960-by-640.

More pixels always make an intuitive leap for a next-gen phone, but the specific 2x factor here could be strategic as well. By keeping the same proportions as past iPhones, Apple eases compatibility issues between generations: Just turn one pixel on any current iPhone app into four pixels and you have a version that should look identical, without any crazy scaling.

How about having a number that earn you rebate on each incoming call? The 0845 numbers  are a constant source of revenue for businesses since the business earns profit for attending every incoming call on their 0845 number. Another advantage to the business is that it would not be charges for receiving unnecessary or unwanted calls.
The customers have an increased incentive to call up the business for simple enquiries or placing orders since they are required to pay only a flat rate of 5 pence per minute when calling from a UK landline. Since the customers are charged 5 pence per minute, 2 pence out of it is given to the recipient. The business and the 0845 number vendor make a contract that on receiving each incoming call; the business can generate revenue up to 2 pence per minute. Knowing the fact that customers are being charges for the calls, the business can enhance its customers service and treats caller with more humbleness and professionalism.
0845 numbers also provide the benefit of call divert option to another landline number of your choice without any extra charges. The 0845 number can be embedded on the existing landline number. This means the business has the dual benefit of receiving calls on both its usual landline and the 0845 number without any additional equipment. Another advantage of 0845 number is that it can acquired for lifetime i.e. even if the business has to relocate itself, the 0845 number can simply be directed to the landline number of the new location.

Clickfree already showcased a trio of new automatic backup devices, but it managed to save just one for dexterous crowd: the Traveler for BlackBerry. Similar in design to the Traveler SD, this 16GB microSD card is tailor made to slip inside of your BlackBerry and then backup critical information from your PC or Mac. This one’s aimed primarily at business travelers, who are entirely more likely to have their BlackBerry on them than some random hard drive. If 16GB just won’t cut it, the company is expected to reveal larger versions a little later in the year. The process works as such: slap the card within your phone, connect it to your PC via USB and watch as the software syncs new files and creates a backup of anything that has changed. It’ll start shipping by April for a lofty $89.99 (16GB) / $149.99 (32GB), so make sure you can plop this thing on that corporate card before mashing “go.”

Though Windows Mobile is effectively dead (Windows Phone set to be the chosen moniker when the flashy-looking Series 7 OS launches later this year), that won’t stop those at Apple celebrating the news that iPhone sales sailed past those of Microsoft’s mobile division last year, moving iPhone into third place in the global smartphone race in the process.

That’s according to a batch of statistics released by research firm Gartner. The company’s latest findings suggest more iPhone handsets were sold across the globe throughout 2009 then WinMo smartphones.

It’s an impressive stat when you consider that iPhone is just one handset compared to the leagues that run WinMo software, but Apple still has some way to go if it wants to be top dog.

Gartner claims iPhone sales made up 14 percent of the smartphone market last year to WinMo’s 9 percent, but that still puts Apple behind the two leaders of the pack: BlackBerry manufacturer RIM in third place with 20 percent, Finnish firm Nokia still dominant with a mighty 47 percent.

Nokia’s share is falling, however, and Gartner believes this is largely down to Apple and RIM, the two already credited with eating into Nokia’s sales throughout the course of last year.

What’s more, the next two years should see some major shake-ups in the smartphone market, giving Apple the opportunity to make further inroads into their competitors’ respective shares. Current OS leader, Symbian, is likely to be fazed out as we head towards 2012. Instead, owner Nokia is set to focus on its recently announced MeeGo platform in conjunction with Intel.

That will effectively unseat the market leader, and with two new operating systems in the form of the aforementioned Windows Phone 7 and Samsung’s much touted bada platform, it looks like the iPhone is set for a competitive start to the decade.

The answers are all available via your mobile. The acquisition of satnav technologies in mobile phones is additionally a big plus.

Location-based services are plentiful, and there are new ones appearing all the time, including Google’s Near Me Now, Foursquare.com and blockchalk.com, although the latter is predominantly catered for the US market at the moment. A nifty gimmick is the chance to leave location-based messages in a café or at the end of your street, which gives users the opportunity to leave behind their cyber tag or virtual graffiti without actually despoiling the streets.
